Panel Talk | Chris Huen: I Do Nothing Everyday with Tung Pang Lam

Friday, 27/09/2024

Join artists Chris Huen Sin-Kan and Tung Pang Lam for a discussion about Chris’s creative journey, moderated by curator Viahsta Yuan. The two artists first connected at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where Tung Pang taught one of Chris’s classes, and their relationship, shaped by years of conversations on contemporary art, offers unique insights into Huen’s work.

The discussion will begin by exploring the themes of Huen’s solo exhibition, I Do Nothing Everyday, and his deep fascination with capturing the ordinariness of daily life. Together, they will delve into the motivation behind creating art, even when it feels futile. The conversation will also reflect on Chris’s early works, examining how personal experiences have shaped his artistic development, particularly the evolution of his brushstroke and style over time.

Finally, the talk will touch on themes of cultural identity and displacement, focusing on Chris’s transition from Hong Kong to the UK. Both artists will share their experiences navigating the complexities of the art world across different cultural contexts, offering a thoughtful exploration of art, identity, and belonging.

About Tung Pang Lam

Hong Kong born, working as an artist between Hong Kong, London and Beijing in his early stage, now lives and works in North America and Hong Kong. Lam experienced the coming-of-age coincides with drastic social changes, a result of his homeland’s decolonisation from constitutional monarchy and new allegiance to China in a short span of time. Traversing between the media of painting, site-specific installation, sound and video, Lam’s playful practice arises from a curious imagination that recombines traditional iconography and vernacular elements, innovating with a myriad of found objects and images to form new practices that are often experimental in nature.

Lam’s work is collected by LACMA (Los Angeles), Asian Art Museum (San Francisco), Burger Collection, the Deutsche Bank, Royal Bank of Canada, Hong Kong Museum of Art (Hong Kong), Kadist Art Foundation (France and USA), White Rabbit Contemporary Chinese Art Collection (Australia) and M+ (Hong Kong), among others. He was awarded Hong Kong Arts Council Scholarship and the Asian Cultural Council Fellowship to live and work in London and New York respectively. In 2012, he was awarded the Outstanding Contributions to the Development of Culture and Arts by The Secretary for Home Affairs, Hong Kong. Recent exhibitions include solo exhibition at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, group exhibition in the Seattle Asian Art Museum and Crow Museum at the University of Texas.

About Chris Huen:

Chris HUEN Sin Kan was born in 1991, Hong Kong. He obtained a BA in Fine Arts at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2013. With an emphasis in painting, HUEN’s practice explores the minute and exquisite experiences of everyday life. The artist believes that the essence of existence should not be constructed nor constricted by conventions that are the result of a collective cognition. Instead, he believes that life should be informed by intuition on a personal level. He is particularly drawn to fanatical behaviours and trivial moments that carry immense vitality such as a small dog or an ordinary lawn. Huen’s large-scale oil paintings, a constellation of brush marks often starring a cast of recurring characters including his wife Haze, son Joel, daughter Tess and dogs Balltsz, MuiMui and Doodood, evolve organically and haphazardly; Huen forgoes underdrawings and sketches, and rather than paint from a photograph or from the scene itself, opts to eternalise the minute and the transient from feeling and memory. Huen’s technique, imbued with both deft abstraction and the hallmarks of traditional Chinese ink painting, involves layering one dab of paint over another until the pattern on the canvas perfectly echoes the spirit of the scene. Through this progress Huen wants to discover the distance between appearances and our recognition of things.
